Even though there is no total cure for this asbestos-related cancer,it is possible to treat and manage it as long as the disease is diagnosed early enough and medical care is specialized. Because mesothelioma is such a complicated disease, treatment should be tailored to exactly what your body needs. It also depends on the stage and type of cancer as well as your age, general health and how aggressive you want your treatment to be.At the present, mesothelioma victims have three options for treatment, these include, surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. These treatments are available to cure this disease.

Surgery. Complete removal of the the affected organ or its part. The type of surgery for mesothelioma depends on the stage and location of the cancer.Surgeries can have different objectives, depending upon the stage of the cancer and your overall health of the patient. Some can be highly aggresive and long lasting, but potentially curative and life changing. Others can be less painful and more soothing in nature. Surgery often is accompanied by some type of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, with the goal of killing any cancer cells that might have been left behind.

Radiation.Radiation is usually recommended as a form of palliative care, to manage symptoms. Radiation is often recommended for patients who are too weak to withstand the rigor of surgery.Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to damage tumors and stop them from further growing and dividing. It is also used to manage a tumor’s growth. However, radiation side effect is that it can be toxic to various organs, and damages DNA while killing cancer cells, so it is used sparingly and only with certain types of mesothelioma.

Chemotherapy.Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells, usually by stopping the cancer cells' ability to grow and divide. For most mesothelioma patients, chemotherapy is administered directly into the chest cavity (intrapleurally) or the abdominal cavity (intraperitoneally). This has proven more effective than intravenous chemotherapy (administered systemically through an IV in the veins). The chemotherapy agents used most frequently in the treatment of mesothelioma include cisplain, carboplatin, Alimta (pemetrexed), gemcitabine, Navelbine, Onconase.Though some of these drugs may have  side effect, but they are also effective and efficient. .

People are also looking at the alternative mesothelioma treatment because of the complex nature and deadliness of mesothelioma. Not only patients, but researchers and doctors are trying to find out new ways to treat mesothelioma. 'Alternative' refers to the use of different methods from the traditionally accepted. Most alternative mesothelioma treatments are not scientifically approved but certain treatments have found to give succour to patients and certain others are found to be of no use. Intraoperative Photodynamic Therapy (IPT), Immunoaugmentative Therapy (IAT) and Gene Therapy are some of the important alternative mesothelioma treatments in modern medicine.

Greater number of mesothelioma diseases are directly linked to asbestos exposure. It is usually due to sheer negligence of an employer, who does not issue the necessary warning before offering employment. Hence the employer should be ready to bear the responsibility of the treatment cost. The patient should consult an attorney who has a good idea of the cost of treatment. Mesothelioma treatment costs in such cases can be recovered easily from the employer.
